ORIZABA GOLD MINE was established in 1886 as the only mine in Maricopa County with its own smelter. Most of the ore in Arizona
was shipped by railway to New Mexico and Texas. It was the first mine to incorporate the use of rivets for their head-frame in
1894, where steel cables were utilized to operate a pulley and winch system that collected buckets of ore. Retrieval of ore by 1940s
included a final decent of 600 vertical feet. The ore was carted by horse or mule to the smelter, crushed, and heated to 2200F. Intense
heat creates molten ore, which is poured into large steel pots. The gold sinks to the bottom of the pot and is drained into ingot
molds, creating gold bars.
